Senior Citizen Discount Promotion enjoy one of the more unconventional sources of revenue for the Indian Railways, was withdrawn throughout the corona pandemic; later, in July 2025, Indian Railways reintroduced it sans any delay.As far as the discount is concerned, the senior citizens stand half ticket discount for their fare.
Eligibility For The Concession
The following conditions are there to avail of the concession:
- Men aged 60 years and above
- Women aged 58 years and above
Such passengers can book on discounts on fares for Sleeper Class, AC Chair Car class, and AC 3-Tier class tickets either from the IRCTC website or through mobile apps or at the counterpart railway counters.
Discount Details
The rates have been restored to:
- 40% discount for Male Seniors
- 50% discount for Senior Women
The discount shall be applied on the Base fare only and will not apply to any reservation charge, superfast charge, or any other charges thereon.
Classes And Trains Covered
Almost all express and mail trains all over India would be covered under this discount scheme, such as:
- Rajdhani Express
- Shatabdi Express
- Duronto Express
- Mail/Express trains
Discounts at present do not apply to premium trains such as Vande Bharat or Tejas Express.
Effective From July 1, 2025
Senior citizens will be allowed to start making bookings for Discounted Tickets for travel starting on or after July 1, 2025. The IRCTC has kept the option of senior citizen concession enabled during booking. One should carry a valid **ID proof with age verification** during the journey; else, one is liable to a penalty and denial of concessions.
Why The Return Now?
The government had cited public demand, increased railway revenue, and improvement in economic conditions as factors to restore the concessions. With the hike in living costs, the discount reintroduction will freight beam on more than 20 million senior passengers every year and make travel easier for senior citizens.
